4 Steps to the Perfect Home Office

No matter if you work from home full time or you put in extra hours at home from time to time, creating a home office that inspires you and keeps you organized is key to your success. Choosing the right office furniture is just the beginning. These four steps will help you create the perfect home office.

1. Choose the Room for Your Home Office

Finding the right space can be a challenge. If you have a room you can convert into a home office, it’s easy. However, if you don’t have a spare bedroom, or prefer a different space, finding the right spot can take a little effort. You may need to use a portion of a guest room, or tuck it into a nook in your home.

Before you decide on the location of your home office, figure out how much space you will need. If you are using it for a place to pay bills and keep them organized, then a small nook may be perfect. If you are working from home full time, you may want an entire room or at least part of a guest room where you can close the door for privacy.

Think about the home office furniture and equipment you will need in the space. This may include a desk, chair, computer or laptop, monitors, printer, file cabinets, and shelves. Will all of those items fit in the space? The Island Estate Fraser Desk from Tommy Bahama gives you plenty of space for work supplies as well as a drop front keyboard drawer.

Whatever space you choose, make sure it can be quiet, private, and without distractions. Also, ensure that you have enough natural light. Although you can add lighting if needed, research indicates that natural light increased productivity by 3-40%.

2. Design Your Space

What are you looking for in your space? Organization? Inspiration? Productivity? Creativity? All of the above? In this instance, yes, you can have it all. Make sure you style your office in a way that gives you energy and inspiration.

Beyond that, decide whether you want traditional, rustic, modern, or eclectic furnishings. Create a Pinterest board for your ideas, and soon you’ll see a pattern of what inspires you. Think about the colors. While you don’t want colors so calming that you fall asleep, you also don’t want colors so jarring that you can’t work. Research shows that red helps with attention to detail, blue spurs creativity, and yellow makes us happy. Keep these colors in mind when you are choosing colors for your home office.

3. Purchase Your Office Furniture and Equipment

You may have everything you need, or you might find you have to fill in some gaps when it comes to home office furniture and equipment. It may be tempting just to grab a chair from the kitchen, even for just a little while. Don’t go that route. Instead, consider the ergonomics of how you use your computer and how it affects your body. Some chairs give you more support than others and are way more comfortable.

Consider a modular system for your home office furniture, such as the Cheery Creek collection by Hooker Furniture. The collection features several desk styles, lateral files, computer credenza, storage cabinets, and bookshelves. You can always add more pieces as you get a feel for what you really need in the space.

4. Add the Final Touches

Just like any other room, office accessories can make all the difference to your comfort and productivity. You’ll need a desk lamp and sconces or a floor lamp to get ample lighting. Also get a cell phone stand to keep your phone from being buried under paperwork. And a charger, of course.

If you are going to be spending many hours in your home office, you’ll want it to be a pleasant, comfortable, and productive space. Take the time to make sure it fits your needs. You’ll get more done and be happier while doing it.
